Continuing to look at the fruit of the Spirit (See Galatians 5:22-23) and how each aspect finds its roots in love with reference to 1 Corinthians 13, in verse 6, we read “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” Sound like “goodness” to you?
What is the truth? For me this was one of the questions I constantly asked when struggling with my porn addiction. I would question “If God is able to help me, then why isn’t He helping?” I would try break free, then fail, only to ask myself again “Who is God to me? Who do I believe I am to Him?” Truthfully, I doubted God’s ability to set me free, despite being told everything, I would say I believe that I could be free, but on the inside, I knew I would fail once again. Thankfully God sent me on a journey, in which I learned many lessons, which you can read here. Above that though, I had to learn the truth. I had to learn that God works when we fully believe that He can!
Why am I mentioning all this? Well goodness comes from being able to rejoice in the truth, the truth that Christ has come to set us free. He has already saved us. When we don’t rejoice in this truth however; when we don’t believe in His power like I once did, we delight ourselves in evil. Now I don’t mean that we are seeking to go do bad and evil things, but by allowing doubt in, when are delighting in the evil of the devil, as we are allowing his doubts to rule us. We are saying that we would rather doubt than believe, that we would rather take the devil’s side than God’s side in some sense. Now I know it is not an easy thing to do, to stop doubting, but it is possible! Jesus never said it would be easy, but as my one friend said, “It will always be better with Jesus.”
So how do we stop doubting and rather rejoice in His truth? Well it all starts with knowing what the truth is. The truth is His word, He is the truth! If you are not reading His word and holding on to what it says, I urge you to start! Without His word, we would all be very vulnerable! His word is our protection from doubt. I cannot go a day without reading His word, for that will be the day I give the devil a foothold in my life.
Once you start to read what the truth is, that is when you can rejoice in the truth! For when you understand what is really true, you will be filled with joy, grow in strength and put on His armour. His truths are filled with His goodness, having His truths in us, will bring with them their goodness, and we will see our lives become better, not necessarily easier, but we will live the good life we are called to live.
Going forward, a few things I need you to know:
1) Jesus loves you unconditionally, so don’t ever doubt this if you fail. (Romans 5:8, 1 John 4:16, John 3:16)
2) Change is a process. From living in doubt, to living in truth is more often than not a journey, a journey of practicing the application of the truth, and one cannot expect to get it right straight off the bat. So don’t get disheartened, slow progress, is still progress, keep going!
3) My blog cannot be the truth in your life. I cannot set you free from any addiction, but Christ can, I can merely guide you to Him. So take the journey, you know who you need to go to! Have good aim, and keep going to Him!
