THE POWER OF TURNING A BACK ON PORN

Freedom from sin, captivity and guilt. Finding your Freedom in Christ.

Freedom from sin, captivity and guilt. Finding your Freedom in Christ.

Yesterday, I was challenged by a friend, “What are the benefits from breaking free from porn?” It may seem like an easy question that would have obvious answers, but it isn’t.
What I found, was that porn destroyed aspects of my life and effected me in ways I could never see coming, ways different to those who were addicted around me. So I can tell you that porn destroys, but on the other hand, I can also say a life free of porn does not build a life. Hear me out on this.

Porn destroys relationships, destroys intimacy and destroys reality to name but a few ways it can destroy. Breaking free and turning away from porn, doesn’t mean that your life starts getting better. The reason being, if we just turn from porn, we are still left broken, with the destruction of what it has done in our lives. It is only when we turn 180 degrees towards God and not just 90 degrees away from porn (or any addiction) that we can truly start to build our lives up again.

Turning from porn is not enough. We have to turn to God.

When we turn to God and put our backs to our old ways, things do get better. In my life, I have seen my memory improve, my relationships improve and the best change has been the joy that I have found in the Lord. This doesn’t mean that there is no aftermath of my addiction. For example, the images I viewed years ago don’t disappear over night like my schoolwork did. The rubble is still there, however, over time this has been cleaned by God’s grace in my life, images start to fade, mind wiped clean, control over one’s thoughts is regained, and now schoolwork seems to stick in my mind a little longer than a day. Change isn’t instantaneous in all areas, although in some it will be, but one must always remember we are on a journey. War does not end and then life goes back to what it was before the war overnight, but life certainly is different from being in war, to being in a peaceful country.  The fight against pornography is a war, but when we turn to our stronghold Christ, the victory is ours!

Acts 3:19 (NIV)
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord

We need to turn to God, not just away from sin. What I love about the verse above, is its promise to me and to anyone who breaks free from porn or any addiction and sin. When we repent and turn from our sin to God, our sins are wiped out. For me this is a promise of both victory and forgiveness, victory as God will wipe out my enemy for me, and forgiveness, as all my past sin has been wiped clean and I am starting on a new slate. There is also a promise of refreshing times to come. Anyone who is addicted will tell you that breaking free from the addiction is tiring! It is a constant battle that can drain us of all our energy, but we are promised that refreshing times are on the way!

So to answer the question, what will change, what are the benefits of breaking free from an addiction to porn, there are many, some which will be specific to you, but some things are certain. We will benefit joy, peace, freedom, strength, self-control, and refreshment to name but a few. What we all know is that living in a world of peace is better than living in a world of war, and we can not escape the war by continuing to view pornography, even on an occasional basis. We can not escape the war against sin until we turn to Him who will bring us victory over all sin!

A word of encouragement for those just starting the journey:

John 14:27 (NIV)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

1 Corinthians 15:57 (NIV)
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
or specifically as the NLT puts it,
But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
