So in thinking and praying about what to write next In the series The Power Of Finding Freedom From Addictions, God reminded me that I could not be free until I knew Him. As one of the comments on my last post also reminded me, we cannot be free until Christ truly sets us free. Free from sin, free from guilt. To know this though, we have to know that it is His promise to us.
We have to know that God loves us, that He has taken on our sins for us. We have to know we have been forgiven. We have to know that God wants and is welcoming us home into His kingdom! Reading God’s word and becoming intimate with Him will show this to us. We have to know that Christ has promised us freedom, I love the way we are told in
Galatians 5:1 (ISV)
The Messiah has set us free so that we may enjoy the benefits of freedom. So keep on standing firm in it, and stop putting yourselves under the yoke of slavery again.
We are promised and have been set free! Now, we are called to stand on this promise! Stand firm in it!
What often happens though, is as we take a stand, we get attacked. for someone standing brings glory to God and the devil does not want this. So often, in dealing with temptation, the first way the devil will attack us and try to keep us captive, breaking us down, is to plant a seed of doubt in our thinking.
“If Christ truly wants you free then why doesn’t He free you, why are you still tempted?”, “Is it really a sin to masturbate?”, “Is it really what God requires of you, one more time won’t matter”, “No one knows, you aren’t hurting anyone so why stop what pleases you?”, “You want this, don’t you want the pleasure it can bring you”. These are but just some of the many lies and seeds of doubt that we can hear.
The good news is that the counter to all these lies – the truth, can be found in His word. I want to urge you all to take a step deeper into God’s word, don’t just plod in it, dive into it, this doesn’t necessarily mean reading chapters after chapters a day, but it does mean coming away from your time in the word knowing or being encouraged by something you read.
We need to be feeding off God’s word, strengthening ourselves in His promises over our lives. So below I have listed some verses, which should help you answer some of the doubts you might have had, such as the ones I mentioned earlier. I urge you to go look them up (Read different versions), and spend time reading them, feasting on them, make them apart of who you are, stand firm on what they promise you!
1 Corinthians 10:31
Matthew 5:28 – why masturbation is a sin, as it is fulfilment of our lusts, which cause us to sin in committing adultery in our hearts. There is also some neurological evidence behind this verse, which if you ask for I can share.
John 8:44 – speaking of the devil
James 1:2-4; 6; 12-14; 21-25
James 4:7 – however, that with regards to sexual temptation we are not told to resist but rather flee – 1 Corinthians 6:18
1 Peter 5:9
1 John 3:9
Romans 6:1-2; 17-23
If you still want more of Gods promises for your life, great! I would urge you to start looking in Psalms and Proverbs, you will find many a verse to feast on here, two of my favourite books of the bible!
