So as promised, here begins a series of posts on how to break free from addictions in your life. Although I will specifically be focusing on my journey of breaking free from pornography, the principles are the same for any temptation which is holding you captive.
I will start with what is the most important lesson I had to learn. For many years, as you might have read in my testimony, I struggled with porn, trying to break free for many of those years. The thing is, I kept failing. I kept asking God, if it is your will for me to be free then why am I falling back into the same temptations I know I shouldn’t be captive to? It is only now that I understand the answer I received.
You see, it is God’s will for us to be free, but what would have happened if I had broken free from this addiction on my own, is exactly what happened after I broke free for 6 months. I thought, now is the time for me to start sharing my story to help others. This wasn’t for God’s glory though, it was for my glory. I wanted to be the one who could say, I have broken free from an addiction to porn. I wanted to be the one who could go to others and say, hey I can help you, this is what I did. The truth of it all though, is God allowed the temptation to continue to the point where I could no longer take it. I could no longer take it, because I had not learned the strength of having the Saviour behind me as a motivation, I could not take it because it was all to tiring for me to pretend to be the person I still was on the inside. Christ had not yet renewed me in His strength.
The thing about breaking free from any addiction, is it has to be for the glory of God. This is crucial, and I can’t emphasise it enough. We shouldn’t want to break free so that we feel good about ourselves, as then we are just trying to satisfy ourselves as we are trying to satisfy ourselves with the temptation we succumb to, that being porn in my case. We can pass the buck on, trying to find joy in many places like I did, seeking it in friends, girlfriends or boyfriends, affirmation from others, the list goes on, but until we seek our joy in pleasing the Lord, we will never truly be free.
Christ sets us free. Today I can say, I am free only because of Christ, nothing I could do or have done has earned me the freedom I have. It is His gift to all of us, so long as we give Him the glory and thanks for it. No one wants to give a gift that won’t be appreciated.
Once I learned this lesson, your outlook on everything changes. No longer are you trying to break free because you think you need to, now you are trying to break free because you want to please God, now your motivation is everlasting.
In 1 Corinthians 10:31 we find the scripture which I live my life by.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
It is the reason I am free, the reason I blog, the reason I tweet (You can even see from my bio on twitter which hasn’t changed from the start), the reason I do everything I do, is not for myself, but for His glory.
Have you ever wondered where those Christians who seem strong in their faith get their strength, even though times may be hard? I certainly did! Well I can say from experience now, my strength comes from God, Christ and the Holy Spirit working in my life. I will boast in the Lord, for He has been so good to me!
No matter what happens I know I will be able to use it to glorify Him, because ultimately He has good plans for my life. All I have to do, all we have to do, is accept His gift with thanks, glorifying Him for the blessings received. I challenge you whether you are captive to temptation or not, to glorify God in everything you do, and watch as He strengthens you, fights your battles and blesses you through your everyday life.
